What we process when you visit this site
This website is a static, informational site. It has no user accounts, no contact form, no newsletter, and no comment function, so you cannot submit personal data to us through it.
When you open a page, your browser necessarily transmits technical information to the web server, which records it in a log file:
- your IP address
- the date and time of the request
- the page or file requested
- the HTTP status code and volume of data transferred
- the referring page, if your browser sends one
- your browser type and version, and your operating system
Purpose. This data is required to deliver the pages to your browser, to keep the service stable and secure, and to detect and investigate attacks or misuse.
Legal basis. Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR. Our legitimate interest is in delivering the pages you request, keeping the server stable and available, and detecting and investigating attacks or misuse. This is the same basis the German Cancer Research Center states for the equivalent processing on its own websites.
Retention. Log data is kept for a maximum of seven days, after which the IP addresses are deleted or anonymised.
No tracking, no cookies, no third-party content
We want to be specific here, because it is unusually little:
- No cookies are set. The site does not use cookies for any purpose.
- No analytics or tracking. There is no web analytics service, no tracking pixel, and no advertising technology.
- No third-party resources. All fonts, images, stylesheets, and scripts are served from this server. In particular, no content is loaded from Google Fonts, from a content delivery network, or from social media platforms, so no data about your visit is transmitted to any third party.
- No social media plugins or embedded media.
The only data stored in your browser is a preference for light or dark appearance. It is written to your browser's local storage only if you click the light/dark switch yourself, it contains no identifier of any kind, it is never transmitted to the server, and you can clear it at any time through your browser settings. This is storage that is strictly necessary to provide the function you explicitly requested (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG).
Links to other websites
This site links to external websites, for example to publishers and preprint
servers such as doi.org, arxiv.org, nature.com, sciencedirect.com, and
rdcu.be. Those links are ordinary links: nothing is transmitted until you
choose to follow one. Once you do, the operator of that site is responsible for
its own data processing, and this notice no longer applies. Please consult the
privacy policy of the site you are visiting.
Recipients of the data
The log data described above is processed on servers operated by the German Cancer Research Center. It is not passed on to third parties, and it is not transferred to a country outside the European Union.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you (Art. 15)
- rectification of inaccurate data (Art. 16)
- erasure of your data (Art. 17)
- restriction of processing (Art. 18)
- object to processing carried out under Art. 6(1)(f), on grounds relating to your particular situation (Art. 21)
To exercise any of these rights, please contact the data protection officer named above.
Right to lodge a complaint
You have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority.
For the German Cancer Research Center this is the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information:

Graurheindorfer Straße 153
